Well, Niles did it again: for the second time in as many years, the village threw a heavily attended end-of-summer “Block Party.” The date, August 26, was a bright, clear Saturday, and the parking lot and athletic fields (Culver School’s) behind the Seniors and Fitness Centers quickly filled with families having fun.
The Library partnered with the Niles Senior Center, the Niles Fitness Center, and Culver Elementary to pull out the stops. The 11:00-to-2:00 event featured huge inflatable slides, fire trucks, a concert by School of Rock (doing creditable renditions of Stones, Hendrix, and other greats), hot dogs and popcorn, and tent pavilions offering everything from 3D printer demos to make-your-own-bookmarks to free chocolate (dark, the healthy kind) and garden-grown-vegetable giveaways.
The event had it all… Three-legged races? Check. Epic bubble-making activities? Check. Knock-down-the-cans ball-throwing games? Of course. A clown juggling on a unicycle? Yeah, that too… Concurrently, the library hosted a Scavenger Hunt, which challenged kids to locate clues hidden among the KidSpace bookshelves to earn prizes.
Hundreds of people came. Everyone appeared to have fun…. Well, that means Niles needs to do it again. After this smash success, why wouldn’t there be a Third Annual Niles Village Block Party?…
