Fandom Spotlight: Game of Thrones

A fandom is sharing a common interest with others about a certain TV show, book series, movie, comic series, band, hobby, celebrity; the list goes on and on! You feel like kindred spirits with anyone that shares your love of what you love and you can spend hours talking about your fandom. Literally, hours.

So what fandom does your heart beat for? At the library, we’ve done several fandom maker labs, where we pick a fandom and do crafts relating to it, including Harry Potter, Goosebumps, and Star Wars.

But this month our hearts are bursting for all things Game of Thrones. WINTER IS COMING!!!

If you aren’t aware, Game of Thrones (the TV show based on George R.R. Martin’s series A Song of Ice and Fire) takes place in the fictional world of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. The medieval epic fantasy series follows various point-of-views of characters through a world consumed by the fight between good and evil, dragons, white walkers, magic, epic battles, fire and death, heartbreak and love, and finding out who you can trust.

The story follows many of the noble families in their continued struggle to maintain a place on the Iron throne. There’s a hundred and eighty characters, which are too many to name here, but the houses to know are Stark, Arryn, Tully, Baratheon, Lannister, Tyrell, Martell, Greyjoy, Targaryen. It’s hard to get attached to any single character because no one is safe or guaranteed a happy outcome. WHO WILL MAKE IT TO THE END OF THE SERIES?!

There’s the on-going debate as to whether or not the books are better than the show. In my opinion, both are amazing on their own (kind of like how the Harry Potter series is great as both). The book series will give you more than enough details and backstory of every character and family to keep your brain buzzing for weeks at a time. With the show, you can watch the characters come to life from the page and fangirl over the curls that grace the wonderful head of Jon Snow. I mean, seriously, look at that luscious mane.

In honor of the release of the final season of Game of Thrones, we’ve made some amazing crafts in the Creative Studio! Check them out below!
