This week’s Big Idea: You can describe sounds in a variety of ways.
Activity: This week we challenged kids to use their powers of observation and description to learn about sound. The kids chose an instrument from a proffered bin. We went around the room, and listened to each instrument one at a time. As we listened, we discussed how the sounds were generated from the instrument, and what we thought of when we heard them. Next, we spread out words that are often used to describe sounds, such as tick-tock, kachink, squish, etc. As we sorted through the sound words, we hunted for the perfect words to describe each instrument. We took photos of the results.
Next week’s Big Idea: All sounds are made by vibrations.
