President Obama is asking young people to help our communties this summer through volunteer service!  Here’s what one Niles teen, Katherine Piekarczyk, has to say about volunteering:

Although some of us find community service a hassle, or just another unwanted commitment, I think community service is the best way to make yourself and your community better. It’s exactly what people usually associate it with making a difference. By volunteering at the library not only did I help myself, but I also helped my library, and my community. By helping out the library with their projects, I learned how to do new things such as making a website, and I even learned how to be a better leader.

Community service is definitely something better to do than just moseying around, and letting time go wasted. During my hours of community service, I got to work with new people, and find out new information on new projects I was working on.

Overall, I became more informed, and I was helping others get informed at the same time. For example, at the library when I worked as a volunteer, the librarian I worked with needed a new display, and we decided on a “What to Do on a Cold Winter Day?” display. By researching ideas, I, myself, found new things to do when I’m bored or stuck inside. Over the several weeks of my volunteering, I saw books disappearing, proving that people were actually interested in the topic I researched for them. So this just goes to prove that my community service was, in fact, beneficial, and helpful for me and my community.

So next time you’re sitting at home bored and letting time get wasted, why not take a visit to the library, and ask if there’s a way you can help out, even if its only for an hour? Like our thirty-fifth president, John F. Kennedy, had once said, “One person can make a difference and every person should try.

Thanks, Kathy!
