NaNoWriMo 2010 is almost upon us!  Don’t know what NaNoWriMo is? It takes place each November, and is basically a no-holds-barred month-long writing free-for-all.  The goal is to knock out a 50,000 word novel by the end of the month.

50,000 words in 30 days.  Seem imposssible?  It’s not!  Thousands of people, including teens, have reached the 50,000 goal each of the past 10 years.  The key is to keep at it, just a few thousand words a day, no matter what.

Don’t think that your writing is any good?  Think of this novel as your first draft.  If your novel is rough and ugly at the end of the month, then just remember that you have 11 more months to polish it into a gem. Also remember that just writing something, anything, is an accomplishment.

For NaNoWriMo events near you (including events coming up at the Niles Public Library) visit the official Chicago region website.

We’re midway through Teen Read Week (October 17-23).  I hope everyone has had time to do some reading this week — just for fun.  No, you say?  Then why not take a few minutes right now?  Drop whatever you’re doing, and take just 30 minutes, or even 20, or 15 to read something you enjoy!

It doesn’t have to be a book.  Books are great, don’t get me wrong, but it’s also fun to read magazines and the Onion.

If you do have time to read a book, please consider sharing a brief review here.  Reviewers are entered in a drawing for a book store gift card!

Join us on Sunday for a fun introduction to parkour, or the art of overcoming obstacles.  Hungry zombies are used as motivation to get you started on the road to functional fitness.  The guys at www.zombiefit.org have this to say:

“What if you woke up tomorrow to find your city overridden with zombies, would you survive?  The keys to surviving Z-day are simple: Be able to lift and throw heavy things, run fast and for long distances, and be able to navigate obstacles and urban environments in an efficient manner.”

Watch the ZombieFit team demonstrate workout fundamentals, and then try them out yourself!  Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes so that you’re ready to jump in.

When: Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2:30pm

Join us Saturday for Project Playbill, an original play written for all ages & performed by local teens!  A magical coloring book is stolen from the museum, causing all  colors to disappear.  Detective Scarlett Redd & her assistant Pinky Periwinkle are on the case.  Can you spot the culprit before they do?

Each summer, talented local teens put on a play at the library.  There’s a role for everyone whether it’s writing, acting, directing, creating sets and costumes, or running the lights and sound.  We work hard, but also have fun!
