The holidays are over and school and work are back in session.  Don’t forget, though, that another holiday is coming up in just 2 weeks!

Martin Luther King Day will be celebrated on Monday, January 17 this year. Learn more about the civil rights leader and the holiday to honor him from The King Center.

This federal holiday coincides with final exams for some schools, so we’re having an open study hall on Sunday January 16.  Free food & drinks will be offered for teens who come to the library to study or take a study break between 1:00-4:30 that day.

On January 17, we’re also hosting an Iron Chef competition for teens.  Register here.

November 13, 2010 is National Gaming Day. Libaries are about much more than books, and National Gaming Day is just one way that we show that.  Libraries who register for National Gaming Day will participate in a variety of ways.  Some will host video game tournaments and others will host board game tournaments.  More than 1,800 libraries around the world will celebrate games this year, just the third year of NGD.

We’re celebrating here in Niles with a Yu-gi-oh! card tournament from 2:00-3:30pm. Bring your own deck to join in the fun and for a chance to win prizes.

Anyone who wants to try out Wits & Wagers, the game we received for partcipating in National Gaming Day,  is also welcome.  Wits & Wagers is a party trivia game where you don’t need to know the answers to the questions in order to play!

NaNoWriMo 2010 is almost upon us!  Don’t know what NaNoWriMo is? It takes place each November, and is basically a no-holds-barred month-long writing free-for-all.  The goal is to knock out a 50,000 word novel by the end of the month.

50,000 words in 30 days.  Seem imposssible?  It’s not!  Thousands of people, including teens, have reached the 50,000 goal each of the past 10 years.  The key is to keep at it, just a few thousand words a day, no matter what.

Don’t think that your writing is any good?  Think of this novel as your first draft.  If your novel is rough and ugly at the end of the month, then just remember that you have 11 more months to polish it into a gem. Also remember that just writing something, anything, is an accomplishment.

For NaNoWriMo events near you (including events coming up at the Niles Public Library) visit the official Chicago region website.

Nov. 30 Wrap-Up Party 7-8:30pm

All events take place in the Board Room at 6960 W. Oakton St. Niles, IL

We’re midway through Teen Read Week (October 17-23).  I hope everyone has had time to do some reading this week — just for fun.  No, you say?  Then why not take a few minutes right now?  Drop whatever you’re doing, and take just 30 minutes, or even 20, or 15 to read something you enjoy!

It doesn’t have to be a book.  Books are great, don’t get me wrong, but it’s also fun to read magazines and the Onion.

If you do have time to read a book, please consider sharing a brief review here.  Reviewers are entered in a drawing for a book store gift card!
