Our Summer Reading Club begins Monday, June 7.  Register at the Fiction (lower level) or Reference  (2nd level) desks.

It’s really simple: just for tell us what you read over the summer by filling out a reading log.  You can read whatever you want. Get prizes when you sign up and turn in a log.

Everyone who completes at least one reading log will also be entered in a drawing in August for prizes including an Apple iPod Touch.

Come to our study hall between 5:00-9:00 on Monday to register and get free food!

Help mentor young children through our summer reading game. Great public service experience and fun! If you complete at least 10 hours of service you will be invited to our summer reading volunteer pizza party on August 5th.

All Summer Reading Volunteers need to attend a mandatory orientation session.  The final orientation date is scheduled for June 16 .

Another volunteer opportunity is “Book Buddies” (reading one-on-one with a child).  Ask about it at the youth services desk or call: 847-663-6622

The federal holiday we know as Presidents’ Day is officially intended to celebrate George Washington’s birthday on February 22.

Lincoln’s birthday falls on February 12, and so a dozen states have chosen to celebrate the third Monday of each February as Presidents’ Day, instead.

A few states, including Illinois, also mark Lincoln’s Birthday on February 12.  Unfortunately, for most people it doesn’t mean a day off from school or work.

This February 15, join us for gaming and snacks in the large meeting room from 3-5:00pm.  We’ll have our Xbox and Wii consoles set up, and will be testing out Karaoke Revolution.

January is awards-season in the library world.  Earlier this week, librarians gathered in Boston to select award-winners in several categories for young adults.

They also selected an annual Best Books for Young Adults (BBYA) list, with input from teen readers.  Here are the top ten books from that list:

The Orange Houses by Paul Griffin

The Great Wide Sea by M.H. Herlong

The Reformed Vampire Support Group by Catherine Jinks

Stitches: A Memoir by David Small

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork

Lips Touch: Three Times by Laini Taylor

Written in Bone: Buried Lives of Jamestown and Colonial Maryland by Sally M. Walker

Visit the YALSA website to see the full BBYA list.
